Review of scientific evidence on effectiveness of fertility awareness-based methods for contraception underscores need for higher quality studies
The systematic review led by UNC’s Rachel Peragallo Urrutia, MD, was published this week in Obstetrics and Gynecology. It reviewed 53 studies of the effectiveness of fertility awareness-based methods and rated the studies for their quality.

Study demonstrates positive impact of azithromycin prior to cesarean delivery
Kim Boggess, MD, professor of maternal-fetal medicine, and fellow investigators of the Cesarean Section Optimal Antibiotic Prophylaxis (C/SOAP) study, have discovered that administering the antibiotic, azithromycin, alongside the standard recommended antibiotic regimen, cefazolin, reduces infection rates by 50 percent for women who have a non-elective cesarean delivery.

Honoring Eason
In 2013, Debbi and Walt Clarke experienced the unimaginable loss of their third child, Eason, who was stillborn at 37 weeks. To honor Eason, the Clarkes recently donated two CuddleCots to the North Carolina Women’s Hospital to help families who suffer similar losses, making the hospital the first in North Carolina to offer them to families.

Paying it Forward
Ten-year-old Ellie Stewart was diagnosed with choriocarcinoma in February. Her only plans for the summer were to finish her chemotherapy treatment at N.C. Children’s Hospital. Then she received a surprise gift: tickets to attend Taylor Swift’s June 9 concert in Raleigh. Now Ellie has some memories to help carry her through.
