Ross Boyce, MD, and Raquel Reyes, MD, both assistant professors of infectious diseases, wrote a commentary titled “Implementing and scaling verbal autopsies: into the unknown” for the journal BMC Medicine.

Ciccone receives Thrasher Research Foundation Early Career Award
Emily Ciccone, MD, MHS, will use the $25,000 award to differentiate viral and bacterial respiratory infections among malaria-negative children. The overall goal is to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use without compromising safety in an area where access to care is a real issue.

Katrina Donahue, MD, MPH, in the department of family medicine and Laura Young, MD, PhD, and John Buse, MD, PhD, in the department of medicine were featured in this American Diabetes Association video about the MONITOR Trial and a $1.3 million PCORI-funded effort to translate UNC diabetes research into the clinic.

Watkins Wins Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award

UCLA, UNC, MIT Researchers Successfully Test Coin-Sized Smart Insulin Patch
Zhen Gu, PhD, former professor in the UNC/NSCU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, led animal studies, a precursor to human trials, for a new device to automatically manage glucose levels and deliver needed insulin quickly. UNC’s John Buse, MD, PhD, was co-author of the study.
