UNC SOM student members of the Farmworker Student Health Alliance (FSHA) are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by making fabric masks for farmworkers in North Carolina and creating educational videos in Spanish to help these at-risk workers stay healthy.

Four SOM Students Named NC Schweitzer Fellows
Lauren Halsey, Stephen Himmelberg, Sumaiya Mubarack, and Micayla Jones are four of 25 class members in the 2020-21 North Carolina Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (NCASF). Students will spend the next year learning to effectively address the social factors that impact health, and developing lifelong leadership skills, following the example set by famed physician-humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, for whom their Fellowship is named.

SOM Professor and Two Graduates Receive 2019-2020 LGBTIQA+ Advocacy Awards
Brad Figler, MD, associate professor of urology, received the award for his work creating the UNC Transgender Health Program as a way to support coordination and quality of care for transgender patients. Recent SOM graduates Noa Nessim, MD, and Margo Faulk, MD, received their awards for starting the Gender Affirming Care Clinic at UNC’s Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC, the nation’s first student-run free clinic).

To help address shortages of pediatric PPE due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering created task forces of students, faculty, and designers to make more than 1,000 pediatric masks for UNC Health in just over a week.
