Care Beyond the Clinic
UNC student volunteers and the families they serve recently gathered at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham to celebrate completion of the first year of Beyond Clinic Walls for Kids, an interdisciplinary student group that identifies – and seeks to meet – the medical and social needs of pediatric patients and their families outside the clinic setting.

Infectious Disease Clinic Celebrates Early Heroes
A recent gathering in the UNC Infectious Disease Clinic served as a reunion for the nurses and other medical staff who worked tirelessly to care for patients in the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and ultimately led to the establishment of a dedicated clinic within the hospital for those patients.

Educational Tools Demonstrate Multidisciplinary Bedside Rounds
A new bedside rounding approach will become standard for internal medicine teaching teams at UNC Medical Center. Last year, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) selected UNC as a funding recipient for Back to Bedside, a resident-led initiative to empower medical residents and fellows to increase time with patients, to improve both physician and patient well-being. Medicine residents won a grant to implement a multidisciplinary project. The pilot began in October 2017.

SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals with Golf Channel’s Gary Williams Celebrates 10th Anniversary and 20,000 Patients Served
Since opening its doors in March 2008, SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals has served more than 20,000 seriously ill patients and their loved ones. Anyone can support this critically needed hospitality house by attending Family House’s 10th Anniversary Golf Tournament & Birthday Party on Friday, April 13. Gary Williams, popular host of Golf Channel’s Morning Drive, will emcee both fun-filled events at Chapel Hill Country Club.

Rita Bigham spent 19 years as an elementary school teacher in Carrboro. Today, with the help of her dog, Pippin, she is lifting the spirits of patients and UNC Hospitals staff as a volunteer in the Pet Therapy Program.
