Surgery Grand Rounds - Dr. Raman Mahabir, "Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL): What We Need to Know”
Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving the capsule or effusion surrounding a breast implant. There are 186 cases in the US and nearly 600 worldwide with 12 deaths reported. To date, there are no reported cases of BIA-ALCL associated with smooth breast implants and appears limited to patients exposed to implants with textured surfaces. Through a partnership with a partnership between the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgery Foundation, we continue to investigate the pathogenesis of this rare entity.
