‘Unraveling Zika’: Join UNC School of Medicine experts for panel discussion, Q&A
The UNC School of Medicine has more than a dozen groups dedicated to Zika research and vaccine development. On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the School of Medicine will host an expert panel event and Q&A discussion in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium at UNC’s FedEx Global Education Center. The event is open to the public and audience questions are encouraged.

Baron named director of advanced therapeutic endoscopy

Buchanan named UNC Health Care’s Chief Research Officer
William L. Roper, MD, MPH, CEO of UNC Health Care and Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, has appointed Ian B. Buchanan, MD, MPH, as UNC Health Care’s Chief Research Officer. Buchanan will assume the newly-created role effective Aug. 1.

Last Friday, UNC School of Medicine alum and former Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence, Cedric Bright, MD, was inducted into UNC’s Order of the Golden Fleece – the university’s highest and oldest honorary society.

Enhanced Recovery Program at UNC: Improving perioperative care for patients across North Carolina
The Enhanced Recovery Program is a collaborative, multidisciplinary initiative between the departments of anesthesiology and surgery to improve the perioperative care of patients at UNC. The first Enhanced Recovery pathway was implemented in July 2014. Over the next year, it is anticipated that the Enhanced Recovery program will have reached over 1,000 patients. One of the very first patients to go through an Enhanced Recovery pathway at UNC reflects on his surgical experience one year later.

Ewend named President of UNC Physicians
Matt Ewend, MD, FACS, has been named President of UNC Physicians. In this role, Ewend will oversee the physician clinical enterprise of UNC Health Care, which includes more than 2,400 physicians and 600 Advanced Practice Providers in 450 practices spanning the UNC Physicians Network, UNC Faculty Physicians, and physician practices at UNC Health Care affiliate hospitals.
