VIDEO: UNC study pinpoints gene controlling number of brain cells
The finding suggests that a single gene, called GSK-3, controls the signals that determine how many neurons actually end up composing the brain. This has important implications for patients with neuropsychiatric illness, as links have recently been drawn between GSK-3 and schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder.

In April's Real Medicine, we featured Rev. Richard Joyner, Nash Health Care’s Community Liaison and Director of Pastoral Care, for his work combating poverty, hunger, and chronic disease in Conetoe, North Carolina. CNN picked up the story and Rev. Joyner was nominated as a CNN Hero. Recently, CNN named Rev. Joyner as one of its top ten CNN Heroes of the Year, which puts him in the running to earn CNN's overall Hero of the Year. Please vote for Rev. War vet receives his hearing back
Dr. Oliver Adunka, an ENT surgeon at UNC Health Care, was able to get Dac Carpenter into a clinical trial that installed a sound bridge in one ear. That allows Dac to hear just like he did before he was injured.
