Fake CDC Emails Warning of Flu Pandemic Push Ransomware
ISD’s Information Security Division has received reports of phishing emails that claim to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warning of flu pandemic. Attached to the emails is a malicious attachment that when opened will install the GandCrab v5.2 Ransomware on the target's computer.

2-Step Verification required for Office 365 in November
2-Step Verification will soon be required to access Office 365, which includes email, calendar and OneDrive, among many other applications. School of Medicine faculty and staff will be required to use 2-Step in early November. The mandatory 2-Step for Office 365 will be a phased rollout from November 1st - 8th. In preparation for this, several dedicated 2-Step Help Clinics will be available throughout the School of Medicine.

The University and its employees are targets for sophisticated attacks seeking both sensitive data, cutting edge research, and your money. A School of Medicine colleague was recently a victim of attempted financial fraud.  Sophisticated attackers had acquired biographical information, such as last four digits of social, about the colleague and was able to convince the IT Help Desk to change the password for his account. The attackers logged into the email account and used personal financial information stored in the mailbox to commit significant financial crime by fraudulently charging $25k+ in airline tickets to the SOM colleague's credit card. School of Medicine IT launches final support hubs
The final School of Medicine IT Support Hubs opened for business on Monday, September 17, serving clients in the south of Manning Drive including MBRB, Bioinformatics, Marsico, Genetic Medicine, Lineberger and off campus locations. This is the final phase of the new IT hub rollout where desktop support and other infrastructure services will be offered through hubs staffed by IT professionals strategically located throughout the School of Medicine campus. The Central Hub (serving buildings north of Manning Drive) launched in July 2018 and Physician's Office Building Hub launched in April 2018.
