|Jennifer James, Director, Medical Center News Office
Jennifer is the leader of the medical center news team and oversees internal and external communication activities for UNC Health Care. Prior to joining UNC Health Care in late 2010, Jennifer was an account director in at Ogilvy Public Relations in Washington D.C., promoting health and medical research for the NIH and CDC. Jennifer also previously served as the producer of a weekly television news segment for NBC News Channel in coordination with Johns Hopkins Medicine and Public Health. Jennifer earned a masters degree from the School of Public Health at UNC and has a journalism degree from the University of Oklahoma.
|Stephanie Mahin, Media Relations/Broadcast Manager
Stephanie is UNC Health Care’s primary media relations contact in charge of responding to requests from the news media. She also conducts media training with UNC faculty and leads UNC Health Care’s outreach to news media. As broadcast manager, Stephanie is the executive producer of the "real doctors, real people," "RN: Real Nurses," and "Family House Diaries" monthly video series. Prior to joining UNC Health Care in 2001, Stephanie was medical reporter with the Raleigh NBC-affiliate; general assignment reporter at television stations in Winston-Salem and Washington, D.C. She also worked with CNN in Atlanta. In 2009, she was nominated for a regional Emmy award for a piece she produced on brain aneurysms. And in 2013 and 2014, Stephanie was nominated for regional Emmy awards for the "real doctors, real nurses" and "RN: Real Nurses" series. In 2006, she won the interactive media award from the North Carolina Association of Government Information Officers for the creation of UNC Health Care's Hurricane Katrina Relief Blog, in which UNC physicians and nurses who were deployed to the Gulf Coast wrote about their experiences. Stephanie earned a masters degree in Organizational Communication from N.C. State University and has a radio-television degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN.
|Tom Hughes, Media Relations/Social Media Strategist
Tom is UNC Health Care’s lead news writer for all matters except basic science research. His primary role is to write news stories about clinical research and other clinical activities of UNC Health Care. He also serves as website content manager and social media coordinator for the news team and assists Stephanie Mahin with media relations activities. Prior to joining UNC Health Care in 2001, Tom worked as a news writer and copy editor at CNN.com in Atlanta and as a daily newspaper reporter at the Montgomery Advertiser in Montgomery, Ala. In 2011, Tom won first place in the news release category of the North Carolina Association of Government Information Officers Excellence in Communication Awards. He also won first place in the news writing category in 2005.
|Katie O'Brien, Strategic Communications Manager
UNC School of Medicine
Katie manages internal communication for School of Medicine faculty and staff and collaborates with the School of Medicine and UNC Health Care IT groups on website management and initiatives. Katie graduated summa cum laude from the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi. She earned a Masters Degree in Environment, Politics, and Globalization from King's College, University of London, in 2003.
In 2012, the UNC Health Care and UNC School of Medicine internal newsletters were recognized as the "Best Electronic Publication" in the 2012 Ragan's Health Care PR and Marketing Awards.
|Will Arey, Internal Communications Manager
Since 2006, Will has managed Internal Communications for UNC Health Care and its more than 7,500 employees. He is a 2005 graduate of UNC and earned his MBA from Elon University in 2009. In 2012, the UNC Health Care and UNC School of Medicine internal newsletters were recognized as the "Best Electronic Publication" in the 2012 Ragan's Health Care PR and Marketing Awards.
|Zach Read, Internal Communications Specialist
Zach writes features for UNC Health Care and the School of Medicine and assists the News Team with its internal communications efforts. Prior to joining UNC Health Care in 2013, Zach was associate editor at the University of North Carolina Press. For six years he has written for Inside Carolina Magazine. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Skidmore College and his master’s degree from the Creative Writing Program at Boston University.
|Mark Derewicz, Science Communications Manager
Mark is UNC Health Care's lead news writer and editor for basic research. He collaborates with faculty at the UNC School of Medicine to effectively communicate their work to the media and general public. Prior to joining UNC Health Care in 2013, Mark was the senior writer for Endeavors, an award-winning magazine dedicated to research and creative activity at UNC-Chapel Hill. He received a bachelor's degree in education and history from La Salle University in Philadelphia.
|Max Englund, Multimedia Specialist
Max Englund is UNC Health Care’s multimedia specialist. She collaborates with the news team at UNC Health Care and researchers at the UNC School of Medicine to conceptualize and create engaging images, illustrations, infographics, and other visuals of complex science and research. She received her BFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Danielle Bates, Communications Director
Danielle is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of California, Irvine with dual Bachelor’s degrees in English and Literary Journalism. She joined UNC Health Care in 2007 to lead N.C. Children’s Hospital’s communications program, which additionally encompasses the Department of Pediatrics within the School of Medicine and the N.C. Children’s Promise, the Children’s Hospital’s development arm. An adjunct member of the UNC Health Care news team, Danielle jointly manages media relations on stories related to UNC Hospitals’ children’s programs and pediatrics faculty.
Juli Kidd, Communications Director
Juli Kidd is the Communications Director for UNC Women's Care and UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A native of Chapel HIll, Juli started working at UNC in 1986. She has been with the department of obstetrics and gynecology since 1997 and in her current role since 2008. She is responsible for the departments websites, social media, physician outreach as well as marketing. Juli is a member of the American Hospital Association's Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD) and holds a SHSMD U Healthcare Marketing Communications Certificate.
