UNC leads/ties for first in 8 of 10 HCAHPS categories

UNC Hospitals ranks #1 among Triangle hospitals in six of the 10 categories of the latest Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Provider Systems (HCAHPS) survey.

The six categories we lead the Triangle in are:

  • Patients who overall rate the hospital highly – 78% (note that this is one of our organizational goals)
  • Patients who would recommend hospital to friends & family - 84%
  • Patients given information about what to do during recovery at home – 89%
  • Nurses who communicated well with patients – 82%
  • Staff who explained medicines before giving them to patients – 68%
  • Patients rooms and bathrooms kept clean – 72%

We were tied for first in the Triangle in the following two categories:

  • Doctors who communicated well with patients – 84%
  • Patients whose pain was well controlled – 71%

We finished 2nd in the Triangle in the following two categories:

  • Patients who receive help quickly from hospital staff – 63%
  • Patients whose rooms were kept quiet at night – 58%
