Change in patient shorts

Some units will soon see regular (rather than custom orthopedic) shorts on the linen exchange carts.

Linen Services currently stocks ortho shorts. They are navy blue with snaps to position around the patient. These are custom shorts that costs $12.71 each. Because they are custom items, the lead time to receive the shorts from the manufacturer is 6 to 8 weeks. In recent months we have been experiencing shortages with these shorts.

To resolve this problem and insure we have sufficient supply for patient care, the Linen Committee has agreed to use the ortho shorts for only those units that require positioning the shorts around the patient, rather than pulling them up the patient's leg. The units that will keep the ortho shorts on their linen exchange carts are 5 Bedtower, Rehab Unit, ACC Day-Op and all ICUs and Step Down Units.

The remaining units that currently use the ortho shorts will be switched to the regular shorts effective June 1, 2012. The new shorts are not custom. They cost $5.40 each. They are the same size as the current ortho shorts, but they do not have snaps and have a black drawstring instead of a white drawstring. They are very similar to our pajama pants.
