Walter Armstrong
Spanish interpreter

As an interpreter, Walter serves as a vital link between clinicians and our Spanish speaking families. His calm demeanor and hard work ensure that all families understand medical information they are given.  Walter also created a Spanish telephone line to provide Spanish speaking patients with the opportunity to call regarding medical questions or concerns.

Michelle understands the benefit of providing exemplary service to her co-workers, patients and caregivers.  She always comes into the office with a smile and positive attitude, eager to serve those in need. Her dedication to her duties is apparent in her willingness to take on new tasks and her unfailing dependability.

Medical Technologist I

Jamie truly exemplifies the People pillar through her leadership and service.  She has held many leadership positions, most notably as chair of the 2012 National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week and as chair of the Medical Technologist I Advisory Board.  In addition to her leadership roles and coordination of various programs and events, Jamie extends her Commitment to Caring in her volunteer efforts.

Hematology Oncology

Dr. Buckner best exemplifies the Service, People and Innovation pillars through his dedication to competent and compassionate patient care. Dr. Buckner is a role model for how to effectively communicate with patients and all members of the medical team. He demonstrates innovation through his active participation in research. He is currently working on improving pain management in patients with hemophilia.

Emma is dedicated to people and service in all that she does. She excels at customer service, taking great care to provide comfort for all patients. She delivers blankets, snacks and other items to patients and family members when needed. Emma is highly respected and appreciated by her co-workers and patients, alike.

Malcolm recently received the “Service” Pillar Award for his excellent customer service, and constantly receives positive feedback from patients about his great customer service. He is often praised for his patience, professionalism and knowledge. Malcolm consistently goes above and beyond his normal duties to assist both patients and his team.

Donnie exemplifies not only a devotion to duty, but also a devotion to people.  He always seeks opportunities to help colleagues throughout the hospital, and goes above and beyond his role as a fellow co-worker.  Donnie is an integral part of UNC Hospitals and his compassion and hard-work are not overlooked.

Beverly Ann demonstrates characteristics of the Growth, Service and Quality pillars specifically. She exemplifies personal growth, apparent in her progression from a nursing assistant to her current position in the Transplant Clinic.  Additionally, the quality of Beverly Ann’s work has always been exceptional, making her an invaluable member of the staff.

Melissa contributes specifically to the Finance pillar with her tireless review of charges and constant search for ways to improve revenue in the clinic.  Melissa also takes initiative in her work and acquires new skills to better her performance and her service to patients, co-workers and UNC Health Care overall.

Patrice maintains the highest standard of care for patients seen by the Beacon Program, and treats both internal and external customers with respect and honesty.  Patrice is always positive, energetic and willing to assist others despite her tremendous workload.  She demonstrates her passion for helping children every day.

Gina Thompson
RN, CPN, N.C. Children’s Hospital

Over the years, Gina has been a BLS and PALS instructor, served as chair of the unit’s Recruitment and Retention committee, and has co-chaired the Children’s Services Trach Committee.  She organizes all annual community outreach efforts for her unit.  Gina’s service to the community is also apparent within the hospital walls as she supports management and excels in emergencies.
