The award-winning Brushes with Life Art Gallery is the only art gallery in the area that provides space for adults living with serious mental illnesses to display their work, share their stories and sell their art. The gallery's mission is to provide gallery and studio space to the artists, as well as decrease the stigma associated with mental illness. Art work in the gallery is changed every 6 - 8 months so new art can be displayed.

Artists set their own prices and get 100% of sale proceeds while gallery volunteers do all the framing, advertising, coordinating and logistics associated with running an art gallery. Part of the gallery's outreach programming includes providing artists weekly opportunities to create art together in a safe, supportive environment at the Art Therapy Institute in Carrboro.

The Brushes with Life  exhibition spaces are on 3 Neurosciences and in the Neurosciences Lobby (near the ENT clinic and back toward the loading dock). Additional art can be seen on 1 Neurosciences, in the Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health offices in Carrboro, in off-campus clinics, and in various community venues.

Come join us for our spring 2013 opening on May 21 from 5:30 – 7pm in the Lobby and 3rd floor of the Neurosciences Hospital. Come meet these talented artists and celebrate their accomplishments. Music will be provided by Music over Mind (a non-profit organization bringing musical arts to adults with mental illnesses) in the Neurosciences lobby during the reception.

The Brushes with Life Art Gallery is currently looking for volunteers to help keep this valuable resource available for all North Carolinians. If interested, please call 919-445-0206, or contact us via email:
