University phone system upgrade coming Dec. 9 - Dial 7 + 10-digit number from UNC Hospitals' phones

The University had planned to upgrade telephones in many School of Medicine buildings to Voice Over IP (VoIP) beginning Nov. 10. That upgrade is now delayed until Monday, Dec. 9. This transition will not affect phones at UNC Hospitals and its clinics. However, because of this upgrade we recommend that everyone begin dialing 7 + the full 10-digit phone number (area code plus 7-digit number).

After the upgrade, if you dial upgraded University VoIP numbers using 5-digit dialing, you will receive a “phone disconnected” message. As a reminder, the most commonly dialed University telephone exchanges are:

  • 919-962-XXXX
  • 919-843-XXXX
  • 919-966-XXXX

The University directory, which includes School of Medicine employees, is available here.

For more information about the University’s VoIP transition, view School of Medicine buildings transitioning Dec. 9. Full details are available at http://help.med.unc.edu/voip.
