Announcement from the Medication Assistance Program

Effective Sept. 30, the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) Medication Assistance Program office, currently located on the 3rd floor next to the ACC Pharmacy, will be consolidated with the Central Outpatient Pharmacy (COP) office located on the ground floor of the NC Cancer Hospital. Service will continue to be available for walk-in patients at the COP office M-F, 9 a.m - 6 p.m. Please read here for more information.

Plan Ahead:

To facilitate screening of patients for Pharmacy Assistance Program (PAP) eligibility prior to arrival at our pharmacies:

  • A triage phone number has been established (919) 966-7690.
  • Patients can be screened for eligibility via the triage phone Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm.
  • Patients and caregivers are encouraged to call prior to arrival at the pharmacy.
  • Screening phone calls can be completed in only a few minutes

Same Day Service for Temporary PAP Benefit:

  • Patients without insurance who need a Temporary PAP Benefit supply of medications same day should:
    • Call the triage number (919-966-7690) using their personal phone (if available) or the courtesy phone located in the 3rd floor ACC lobby.
    • Patients/Caregivers will need to provide:
  1. Medical record number and demographics
  2. Attestation of NC residency
  3. Attestation of no pharmacy insurance benefits
  4. Attestation of  household income of 200% or less of Federal Poverty Level
  • Eligible patients will be provided a temporary PAP Benefit for all UNC Pharmacy locations
    • The temporary PAP Benefit allows dispensing of an initial 14-day supply to provide medication until the PAP application and supporting documentation can be completed and returned for review.

Walk-in patients returning completed applications and requested documents, and those who need to be screened for temporary PAP after 4:30 p.m., should visit the MAP Office in the Central Outpatient Pharmacy.  A counselor is available 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Shuttle service is available from ACC to COP 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Full PAP Benefit Process

  • PAP applications will be mailed to patients who receive a Temporary PAP Benefit and by request.
  • Completed applications should be returned within 5 days of receipt via:
    • The provided postage paid return envelope
    • The secure fax line (866) 316-4138
    • Eligible patients will be provided a Full PAP Benefit for all UNC Pharmacy locations for up to 12 months coverage.
