Toner scams reported

Please read here for this important information regarding toner scams experienced within the UNC Health Care System.

Please be aware that your departments may be contacted by disreputable organizations attempting to sell toner and other products outside of our standard procurement process. As an example of some of the interactions experienced within UNC Health Care and how your departments may be contacted, one of these organizations will call and represent themselves as Canon, supposedly provide the serial number of your copier and roll out the pitch that their automated readings indicate low toner and that you need a new cartridge.

Even if refused they will ship a toner cartridge and follow up with a past due notice and harassing phone calls claiming that they received authorization to ship and the sale is legal. Their calls became so frequent in one of our clinics that they were interfering with patient care and upsetting clinic staff with threats of being taken to court.

The two organizations we are aware of to date are:

  • American Business Solutions
  • Modern Distributing Systems (MDS)

It is helpful to know these names but it is more important for your teams to be familiar with our procurement processes and to follow them. Doing so will enable them to confidently decline these scams, in whatever form, and minimize disruption to the department.

We urge departments to reach out to the Purchasing department if these issues arise, and direct such calls, if they occur, to the Purchasing department. Our suppliers for toner are limited, and include only either Staples or the provider of your copier/fax/multi-functional device, should such devices fall under a rental program to include rental, maintenance and toner.
