Gov. McCrory visits Children's Hospital

On Friday, Sept. 13, UNC Health Care and Rock Against Cancer, a local nonprofit that funds music therapy for pediatric cancer patients, hosted Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory at the Children’s Hospital to commemorate National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day.

At the event, Gov. McCrory presented a Special Proclamation declaring Sept. 13 National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day.

The dedication program feature remarks from McCrory, Dr. William Roper, Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, and 10-year-old patient Ashley Burnette of Raleigh, along with her parents, Nicole and Hunter Burnette. Ashley was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma, a solid tumor cancer of the sympathetic nervous system, in August 2010 and later developed evidence of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder/non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (PTLD). Her most recent scans revealed no evidence of disease.

Other speakers inlcuded Ian Buchanan, MD, Vice President, Cancer and Children's Services, Stuart Gold, MD, Division Chief, UNC Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, and Lisa White, PhD, President, Rock Against Cancer.
