The Jason Ray Foundation was founded in 2007 to honor Jason Ray – UNC’s very own “Ramses” mascot. Jason was in New Jersey with the men’s basketball team at the NCAA’s Sweet 16. While he was walking down the side of the road a car hit him. Tragically he died three days later. But, just as his personality was larger than life, his impact continued on after his life ended.

When Jason got his drivers license he designated himself as an organ donor. He explained to his parents that he wanted to help others in case something ever happened to him. After Jason was pronounced dead, his parents, Charlotte and Emmitt, honored Jason’s wishes to be an organ donor. Jason’s organs gave life to four individuals who continue to thrive today. His organ and tissue donations impacted 50 lives in total. This gift was larger than life.

National Donate Life Month (NDLM) is celebrated in April each year, NDLM features an entire month of local, regional and national activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.

Jason Ray Foundation: Seven years after his death Jason’s spirit of generosity lives on through this foundation. The money raised goes to help those people on the UNC Hospitals' transplant list to help them with the costs of the operations, their rehabilitation after the surgery, and with travel and ongoing care.
