Founded by Lara Leininger, RN, CWOCN, at UNC Medical Center, and Angela Richardson, RN, CWOCN, at Duke Hospital, this is the first ostomy awareness 5K race of its kind in the entire nation. The 2014 WWO 5K raised $22,000, with all proceeds benefiting the United Ostomy Association of America (UOAA), which helps strengthen ostomy support groups nationwide and promotes community ostomy education, empathy and awareness.

The race was so successful that the 2015 WannaWearOne 5K race will be held in multiple cities across the nation, including Durham, N.C., Kingsport, Tennessee, and two WWO 5K Fun Runs in Portland, Oregon, and Des Moines, Iowa. There is also an option for participants across the nation to sign up for a Virtual Race.

The Start/Finish for the Durham WWO 5K will be at the Omega Sports near Southpoint Mall. The route is a USATF certified course on the scenic American Tobacco Trail. As with WannaWearOne's previous campaigns, participants will have the option of wearing an ostomy pouch during the event. An ostomy pouching company will donate ostomy pouches to be placed in every participant’s race bag. All participants are encouraged to wear the pouch during the race. There will also be a special race category for the ostomate (person living with an ostomy) and a silent auction will be hosted on race day.

Please join them for this special -- and one-of-a-kind -- event. Go to www.ostomy5k.org for more information and to sign up for the race.
