Beacon Program events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a movement to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence in all communities. During the month of April, the Beacon Program is sponsoring several events that are open to all members of the UNC Medical Center community.

Did you know that nearly one in five women are raped at some point in their lifetime and that about every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted?

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a movement to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence in all communities. Advocates wear teal ribbons to honor all of those who have been affected by sexual violence.

The Beacon Program will be sponsoring several activities during the month that are open to all members of the UNC Medical Center community.

  • Monday, April 18, from noon to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, April 20, from noon to 2 p.m.: Come visit our table in the Women’s Hospital lobby to pick up information from the Orange County Rape Crisis Center, teal ribbons, and adult coloring book pages!
  • Tuesday, April 19: Writing for Resilience will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the main chapel (Memorial Hospital). Come and enjoy a respite for reflecting and writing. No writing experience necessary. (Sponsored by UNC Hospitals Bereavement Support Services, Project Compassion, the Inavale Foundation, and DooR to DooR)
  • Friday, April 22: Show your teal! Wear something teal or a teal ribbon to show your support for all those in our community who have been affected by sexual violence.
  • Tuesday, April 26 - Sunday, May 1: Come see the Clothesline Project at the Children’s Hospital stage. The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to the violence committed against women. Each shirt is decorated to represent a particular woman’s experience, either by the survivor herself or by someone who cares about her. (Sponsored by the Orange County Rape Crisis Center)
