The team is made up of volunteer employees of UNC Hospitals who are trained to meet with colleagues either in a group or one-on-one setting to help lessen the trauma from a critical event experienced at work.

How do you define a critical event? It is an incident that creates staff stress above the ordinary for the health care worker or unit involved, from the unexpected death of a colleague to an inordinate amount of deaths within a short period of time on a unit.

There is no discussion of the particular incident or of any blame, if applicable, and the discussions do not replace counseling.

Coverage includes the Hillsborough Hospital as well.

For more information please contact Eleanor Murray, Chair, at Eleanor.Murray@unchealth.unc.edu.

CISM information is available on the Intranet Departments page as well.
