Reminder: Jan. 29 deadline for Becton-Dickinson Fellowship applications

The 2016 Becton-Dickinson Technologies Fellowship will fund:

  • release time for the project team leader and co-leader, plus 
  • project expenses, related to one of the following topics: 
    • Peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheter flushing and maintenance practices 
    • PIV catheter placement, factors related to success 

Dr. Cheryl Smith-Miller will mentor the clinical investigative teams’ development of clinical research skills. Each team will consist of one primary team leader and one co-leader. Additional research assistants will be considered. All team members are required to participate in the clinical research processes and be fully invested in the project outcomes.

Applicant Requirements

  • Separate applications are required from both the primary team leader and the co-leader. 
  • Employment 
    • Employed full-time (36 hours/week) as registered nurse (RN) at UNCHC 
    • Minimum of 2-years RN experience 
    • Minimum 1 year employment with UNCHC 
    • Currently practicing in a clinical environment 
    • In good employment standing and not in corrective action 
    • Service-Line director approval and support for participation 
    • Nurse manager approval and support for participation 
  • Academic 
    • Minimum degree: BSN 
    • Completed Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) research ethics training (free online course available at:
  • Research experience preferred but not required.
