About Step On Sepsis
Step On Sepsis was first started by Jeff and Helene Zehnder and their Coventry neighbors in Cary, N.C. Their friend, Jerry Minore, had died of sepsis and the couple wanted to raise sepsis awareness while honoring his memory. The Zehnders established the 5K Walkathon/Road Race, called Step On Sepsis. The inaugural event was held on March 23, 2014. With almost 200 people registered, the event raised over $15,000 for sepsis awareness.

This year's Honorary Event Chair is Carol Fowler Durham, a nurse educator at the UNC School of Nursing, who nearly died from septic shock in 2010. Now Carol travels around the country and speaks to health-care professionals and nursing students about patient safety, interweaving her personal experience with sepsis. Carol also serves as patient advisor in the implementation of UNC Medical Center’s sepsis reduction initiative, Code Sepsis.
