Coming April 7: Updated Adult Pneumococcal Health Maintenance Topics and Best Practice Advisories

Updated adult Pneumococcal Best Practice Advisories (BPA’s) and Health Maintenance Topics will be released in Epic@UNC on Thursday, April 7.

In 2014, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) updated adult pneumococcal vaccination recommendations, which includes the use of PCV-13 along with PPSV-23 for patients age 65 and over.

  • For adults age 19-64 with the following chronic conditions: alcoholism, heart failure, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease (COPD & Asthma), current smoker (according to social history), or diabetes, the CDC recommends that patients be vaccinated with a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23, Pneumovax23).
  • For adults age 65 and older the CDC recommends patients receive a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13, Prevnar 13) followed by a subsequent 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23, Pneumovax23). If a patient age 65 or over has a vaccine out of sequence Epic will prompt for the correct vaccine to be given at the appropriate interval.

Please note that this update does NOT include prompts for high risk immunocompromised patients. The high risk immunocompromised Health Maintenance Topic/Plan is planned for the future.
