Do you have difficulty hearing in background noise? Do family members and friends repeat themselves frequently? Do you hear ringing or buzzing in your ears? Have you found yourself avoiding social situations?

Better Speech and Hearing Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders. Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent chronic health conditions facing older adults. Unfortunately, only about 20–30 percent of people who could benefit from treatment actually seek help. Untreated hearing loss is associated with depression and social isolation, fatigue, and even earlier onset of dementia than in individuals with no hearing loss. Treatment can significantly improve quality of life both for the person suffering from hearing loss and for his or her significant other.

Please join the UNC Audiology team for free hearing screenings for UNC employees in the Audiology Clinic! Please RSVP to Ellen Deres, AuD (ellen.deres@unchealth.unc.edu) or Sarah McCarthy, AuD (sarah.mccarthy@unchealth.unc.edu).

Additionally, the Audiology Team will be offering an educational session about hearing loss on Friday, May 20, from 2 - 4 p.m. at our offsite location, the UNC Hearing and Voice Center at Carolina Crossing. This educational event will include a lecture followed by a brief hands-on overview of current amplification and assistive listening technology. This session is also open to patients and prospective patients, so please encourage those concerned with their hearing to attend!
