Hurricane Matthew Disaster Relief

Our thoughts are with those who have suffered losses related to Hurricane Matthew. The loss of life, flooding and damage has been devastating. We have had many co-workers ask for updates on relief and how they can help. We have partnered with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC to host an Essentials and Food Drive Nov 2, 3 and 4.

Sixteen of the 31 counties the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC serves has been severely impacted by the storm and its after effects, including network entity hospitals Wayne Memorial in Goldsboro and Lenoir Memorial in Kinston.

The Food Bank works with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross to collect and deliver to those in need.

Here’s how you can help our colleagues and our community!

A tractor trailer will be located in each of the following locations to collect Essential Items and Food for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC:

  • UNC REX Healthcare: Macon Pond Road Lot, across from ED
  • UNC Medical Center: 101 Manning Drive, NC Women’s Hospital

*You can easily drive up and unload items*

Volunteers are needed to assist at each of these locations – receiving items and sorting food on the truck.

For Macon Pond location please sign up here.

For Manning Drive location please sign up here.

Employees willing to serve as their off-site location’s point person should request a bin from Tom Maltais. A complete list of these locations will be available in the Oct. 27 edition of Employee News Online. All off-site locations without bins must bring items to Macon Pond Road or Manning Drive. Click here to download a flier with donation times and locations. Departments wishing to collect items ahead of time may download an 11 x 17 poster here to post in their workplace.

You may also choose to participate in our Virtual Essentials and Food Drive online through our UNC Health Care/UNC REX Healthcare link. No username or login is required. You may begin by clicking on one of the tabs labeled “Produce,” “Protein & Dairy,” “Grains & Beans,” or “Meals” and choose which items you would wish to purchase for the Food Bank.

If you have questions, please contact Tom Maltais at the Medical Center or Kerry Grace Heckle at UNC REX.

Thank you for supporting those in our community who need it most!
