Inpatient Providers: New 'Indwelling Urinary Catheter' order to combine three existing orders

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 7, several new tools will be available in Epic@UNC to address CAUTI (Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections). These tools include a new 'Indwelling Urinary Catheter' order that will combine three existing orders (NUR380, NUR378, and NUR379) and impact User Ordersets and personal Preference Lists.

Please review this Tip Sheet for details on the new order (NUR388 – Indwelling Urinary Catheter) and how to add it to your personal preference lists and verify customization of the new order within Order Sets.

Background on this change

UTIs are the most commonly reported healthcare-associated infection of which approximately 75% are associated with indwelling urinary catheters. UNC Health Care has implemented a comprehensive CAUTI prevention bundle to include proper use of urinary catheters, aseptic insertions, proper catheter maintenance, and timely removal.

The Indwelling Urinary catheter orders will be updated in Epic@UNC on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to reflect recommendations from the CAUTI Prevention Steering Committee. The updates includes improved indications for indwelling catheter use to reflect best practice guidelines that have been reviewed by clinicians across UNC Health Care.
