The House That Caring Built

UNC Health Care is proud to sponsor the construction of another Habitat for Humanity home. The home is part of Heels for Homes, a collaboration between UNC, the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County to build two homes this spring in downtown Chapel Hill.

In total, Habitat for Humanity will build nine new homes and complete 25 repairs this year in the Northside community.

All UNC Medical Center physicians and employees (including all employees in system departments), along with UNC School of Medicine employees, faculty and students, are invited to participate. No construction skills are necessary. Volunteers are welcome to work on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Anyone wishing to volunteer during their regularly scheduled work hours should speak with their manager and refer to their Community Service Leave policy.

Shifts are from 8:15 a.m. - noon and 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. with a limit of 12 people per shift under the supervision of a construction professional. The home will be located at 618 Sykes Street, Chapel Hill, N.C., just a few blocks from UNC’s campus.

Construction on the home begins in early March and volunteer shifts fill up quickly. These shifts will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To volunteer on the construction site, please email Christine Abernathy (cabernathy@orangehabitat.org) with “UNC HEALTH CARE” in the subject line. Include your desired volunteer date and the number of people in your group and she will do her best to accommodate all requests.

This is the fifth Habitat for Humanity Home UNC Health Care has sponsored in the past seven years.
