Workers instructed to use containment booths in construction areas of high-risk patients

Construction, renovation and improvement projects are in full-swing at UNC Hospitals. Removing ceiling tiles in patient care areas increases the risk of infection with fungal spores by immunocompromised patients. Hospital Epidemiology has identified areas with patients who are at highest risk. In these areas, workers will be instructed to use containment booths.

If staff see workers in the ceiling in a high-risk area such as transplant floors, ICUs, stepdowns, oncology units, operating rooms or other identified area without a containment booth, please tell the worker to stop immediately or contact Plant Engineering at 984-974-0300 and Hospital Epidemiology at 984-974-7500.

For additional information and a complete list of high-risk units, see the fact sheet on ceiling openings.
