Provider Star Ratings Go Public in Find A Doctor

Following a successful pilot in the department of orthopaedics, UNC Medical Center began posting provider star ratings and patient comments on our public Find A Doctor website (https://findadoc.unchealthcare.org/) on July 5.

The star ratings and comments are gathered from the provider section of the Press Ganey Medical Practice survey.  This initiative is in response to the ever-increasing consumer demand for online provider ratings.  Studies have shown that 80% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations, and as many as 77% of consumers begin their health care search online.  Third party rating sites yield few, often negative, comments which translate to low star ratings and unreliable physician reviews.

As a result, the Provider Transparency Program was approved by the Faculty Physicians Board and is managed by the Patient Experience Team at the UNC Medical Center.

The goals of this program are:

  • To provide the public with an accurate description of the excellent patient experience  we provide;
  • To balance the reviews found on third-party websites such as Vitals, Healthgrades and RateMD with our verified patient feedback;
  • To equip our providers with actionable patient feedback for patient experience improvement efforts.

We thank all providers for their ongoing support and for the feedback they provided during the development phase of this project. Please contact the Patient Experience Team at Patient.Experience@unchealth.unc.edu or call 984-974-5006 and ask to speak with Dianne Olmos or Brandon Cole with any questions.
