McCall to retire Dec. 1

Karen McCall, Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for UNC Health Care and the UNC School of Medicine, will retire from her role on Dec. 1, 2017.

Karen began her career at UNC as a director in the Budget Office and then worked in Management Engineering to open the Ambulatory Care Center before joining Institutional Relations (as Communications & Marketing was then known) in the early 1990s. In that role, Karen led the creation of UNC Hospitals’ first marketing programs.

She was instrumental in the growth and development of the Carolina Consultation Center, the UNC HealthLink Nurse Advice Line, and UNC’s referring physician marketing efforts. Her teams incorporated patients into their marketing efforts and partnered with nursing to create the patient experience we know today as ‘Carolina Care.’

As VP of Public Affairs & Marketing from 2001 - 2013, Karen led teams that developed and executed the marketing plans for the opening of the N.C. Women’s and Children’s Hospitals, the N.C. Cancer Hospital, and the Hillsborough Campus. As Chief Communications & Marketing Officer from 2013 – 2017, she led statewide campaigns as UNC Health Care grew beyond Manning Drive to its current size and scope.

Lisa Schiller, System VP of Communications & Marketing at UNC Health Care since 2013, and VP of Communications & Marketing at UNC REX Healthcare since 2006, has been named as interim Chief Communications & Marketing Officer for UNC Health Care and the UNC School of Medicine.

Please join us in congratulating Karen on her retirement and in welcoming Lisa as she begins her new role.
