Tobacco-Free Tar Heels Success Story: Mike Baker

“It’s not impossible to quit smoking. Don’t give up.”

Mike Baker, supply chain business manager for UNC Medical Center, quit smoking 8 months ago with the help of free counseling through UNC Hospitals coupled with an anti-craving medication called Varenicline (Chantix).

Mike enjoyed smoking, but re-evaluated his priorities when his insurance premiums increased. He realized he was spending too much money on cigarettes with the premium increases on top of the usual cost ($35/week)

Since he has become tobacco free, he contributes more to his daughter’s college fund, his car is clean and smells better, he can smell and taste food better, and he doesn’t have a smoker’s cough. The only downside is that he now can smell smoke on other people, and realizes how he smelled while smoking.  With his healthier lifestyle, he hopes to be around to watch his daughter grow up.

Mike recommends the Tobacco Free Tar Heels Program because it is free, convenient, supportive and non-judgmental.
