McLendon Labs Memo: Internal Medicine Provider Performed Testing Training/Competency Program for Regulatory Compliance

Effective Oct. 12, 2017, a new training/competency program as well as EPIC result entry process will be implemented for Attending Physicians and Housestaff in Internal Medicine services performing point of care microscopic analysis and/or fecal occult blood testing at UNC Medical Center, Hospital-based clinics and faculty-based practices. Inpatient Providers, Nurses: New BPA starting Oct. 18 for patients with an infection but no isolation order

Following the Oct. 18 implementation of the Epic@UNC Infection Control module, a new Best Practice Advisory (BPA) will fire for providers, nurses and scribes when a patient's hospital encounter is opened and the patient has an infection but there is no isolation order in the chart.

With recent upgrades, the pharmacy began to include multiple barcodes on medications to help track dispense processes. Clinicians are reminded to continue to use the barcodes closest to the medication product when documenting administration. If you scan the wrong barcode, you may get an error message. Click cancel and then scan the appropriate barcode to ensure patient safety.

Pulling patients to a unit too soon

When a patient is being transferred from the ED to an inpatient unit, the unit clerk/secretary or nurse should complete the transfer via the Unit Manager only after the patient has arrived on the unit. Pulling the patient off the Incoming Transfers section of the Unit Manager before the patient arrives places the patient at risk because of the impact to the patient’s location.
