Flu vaccine is now available for UNC Medical Center employees

Occupational Health Services (OHS) will provide influenza vaccine to UNC Medical Center personnel from Sept. 11 through Dec. 4. All UNC Medical Center staff should be flu compliant by the end of the day on Dec. 4.

In order to be flu compliant, a UNC Medical Center employee must meet one of the following conditions:

  • received vaccine from OHS
  • provided documentation of vaccine from a source other than OHS (via online Attestation form)
  • submitted data documenting a medical contraindication or religious exemption form.

Inactivated flu vaccines (shots) will be available on Sept. 11 with the intradermal flu and egg-free vaccines to follow. The Flulaval Quadrivalent vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was selected this year.  All of the vaccine purchased is in prefilled syringes and is both preservative-free and latex-free.

Information related to internal flu clinics (department or unit level) will be included in future News for Managers/News for Employees. This information will include instructions for requesting and administering influenza vaccine and supplies for giving flu shots. OHS currently has ten (10) VacSeen Scanners (flu scanners) available for managers, flu champions, and nurses to give flu vaccine at the department or unit level.

An attestation form for external documentation is available soon to attest that you have been administered your flu vaccine by a third party (e.g., CVS, Walmart, your provider, non-OHS provider at off-campus location, or your clinic manager who does not record administration of vaccine into a flu scanner). All UNC Hospitals personnel receiving a flu shot from facilities/institutions other than UNC Hospitals should be prepared to be included in a sample of personnel selected to show proof of flu vaccination. UNC Hospitals personnel without proof of vaccination will need to receive a dose of vaccine.

After you are given your flu shot and flu documentation card you may wish to make a copy of your card in case you lose the original. As a suggestion, please use your cell phone to take a picture of the flu card! You may be required to show proof of receipt of flu vaccine.

Beginning Sept 11, there will be a ‘walk-in’ for flu vaccine in OHS every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. No appointment is needed.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, flu vaccination is by appointment only.

In November 2017, OHS will open at 6 a.m. every Monday only and have walk-in clinics every day from 7:30 a. m.– 3:30 p.m.

Reports related to flu vaccination compliance will be sent to vice presidents beginning the first week of October 2017. Please remember that there is a one week lag time associated with reports and we ask you to be patient until the next week’s report is issued before calling OHS to register a problem with the compliance information.

OHS cannot remove health care personnel from the non-compliance list. Completing the Human Resources clearance process, updating Human Resources about healthcare personnel on leave and receiving a flu vaccination with the appropriate documentation of receipt of flu vaccine is what removes HCP from the flu non-compliance list.
