Tax Preparation Assistance

Employees needing help with their tax preparation may qualify for free assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). Tax prep will not be onsite this year but will be available at VITA locations across NC, and qualified employees can have their taxes prepared at State Employee Credit Union.

This service is available for people with low to moderate income (generally $54,000 or less) and who meet certain eligibility guidelines at: http://www.orangecountync.gov/document_center/Aging/2017-18%20Client%20Eligibility%20Guidelines_rev1-18-18.pdf.

While the VITA program is unable to provide these services onsite at the UNC Medical Center in 2019, it is available at numerous locations across North Carolina. To find a VITA location near you log on to https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/.

Assistance is also available through the State Employee’s Credit Union (SECU). The SECU Low-Cost Tax Program is available to qualified members for a flat rate of $75 per return. If you are eligible to participate, SECU preparers will be able to complete and electronically file both your federal and North Carolina tax returns.
