Food insecurity is defined as the lack of consistent access to enough affordable, nutritious food. North Carolina has the 8th highest rate of food insecurity in the nation, with 15.9% of households experiencing food insecurity. Through screening we’ve discovered twice the rate of food insecurity (31.67%) among UNC pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). For these patients, and their families maintaining a sufficient supply of food is difficult due higher nutrition and calorie needs, the financial strain of healthcare, and overall living expenses.

Because poor nutrition status correlates with a decline in lung function in patients with CF, the UNC Pediatric CF Center has established a Food Insecurity Program that provides non-perishable food from our clinic pantry. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help us expand our program to be able assist families in accessing fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, and other perishable items.
