CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In the new metropolitan Best Hospitals rankings, UNC Hospitals ranked 2nd of 18 hospitals listed for the Raleigh-Durham area, which includes Cary and Chapel Hill. Rex Hospital, part of the UNC Health Care system, ranked fifth overall in the region.
U.S. News & World Report utilized their Best Hospitals methodology for the metro area lists. Metro rankings recognize hospitals in the top 25 percent of the nation, rather than the very small percentage included in the national rankings.
The UNC programs for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Kidney Disorders, Orthopaedics, Pulmonology, and Urology are all designated as high performing specialties. These groups joined the nationally-ranked Cancer, Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastroenterology, and Gynecology to help UNC achieve excellence in the Metro ranking.
Patient Satisfaction is also highlighted on the U.S. News website. UNC has an excellent patient satisfaction rating — the highest in our metropolitan area. When asked whether patients would recommend the hospital to friends and family, 84 percent said they would “definitely” recommend UNC Hospitals. That’s much higher than both the state and national averages, which are 71 percent and 68 percent, respectively. U.S. News uses data from the federally managed HCAHPS telephone survey for this measure.
U.S. News & World report also produces a separate ranking of Best Children's Hospitals, which were not included in their ranking of Best Hospitals by Metro Area. North Carolina Children's Hospital at UNC was among 62 facilities ranked in one or more of the 10 pediatric specialties in the 2010-11 version of Best Children's Hospitals. Our Children's Hospital was ranked in Pulmonology and Diabetes & Endocrinology.
