CHAPEL HILL, NC – African American pioneers in medicine, mathematics, engineering, and the sciences are celebrated in a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s traveling exhibit currently on display at UNC School of Medicine’s Bondurant Hall.

“The Creative Mind” exhibit was created by the Academies’ African American History Program. It made its debut at the Koshland Science Museum of the NAS in Washington, DC, and at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 2012. “The Creative Mind” highlights the careers and achievements of the African American scientists featured in the display.

UNC School of Medicine Executive Dean Wesley Burks, MD, first saw the exhibit while he was at the NAS building for a medical conference. He inquired as to whether “The Creative Mind” display could be loaned to universities and medical institutions in hopes of bringing it to UNC.

“I thought it was important to feature the diversity of the people who work here, as well as to feature these outstanding pioneers in the sciences,” Burks said. “I hope that it inspires people and encourages others who aren’t here to think about these areas of science, medicine, mathematics and engineering as a profession.”

Burks said the School of Medicine has several initiatives underway to increase diversity among the student body and faculty.

“The Creative Mind” will be on display in the School of Medicine’s Bondurant Hall until Sept. 2. As part of the initiative to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, UNC Health Care has partnered with the School of Medicine to display the exhibit at several facilities through November. Below is the itinerary. Take the time to visit the exhibit and learn about the accomplishments of many great scientists.
