UNC Health Care receives high marks in latest US News & World Report Ratings

U.S News & World Report has released its annual Best Hospitals ratings. Across the state, several UNC Health Care facilities were recognized for clinical excellence.

In the latest Best Hospital ratings, released Aug. 8 by U.S. News & World Report, UNC Hospitals was nationally ranked or recognized as high performing in ten clinical categories. The latest ratings release focuses on adult clinical care. In June U.S. News released its list of the nation’s best children’s hospitals and UNC Children’s earned a national ranking in nine specialties.

The U.S. News rankings are based on attributes such as patient volume and safety, hospital reputation, and quality.

Roper, MD, MPH, CEO of UNC Health Care. “I have the opportunity each day to see this incredible work firsthand, so I’m pleased to see our people achieve such national recognition.”

UNC Hospitals’ highest rated specialty is Ear, Nose and Throat, which was rated #14 in the nation. The largest jump from 2016 came in Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, which jumped 11 spots to #30.

The full list of UNC Hospitals specialties recognized as nationally rated or high performing includes:

  • Ear, Nose, and Throat: #14
  • Nephrology: #20
  • Cancer: #24
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology: #28
  • Gastroenterology and GI Surgery: #30
  • Urology: #32
  • Pulmonology: High Performing
  • Neurology and Neurosurgery: High Performing
  • Geriatrics: High Performing
  • Rheumatology: High Performing

These high ratings add-up to UNC Hospitals being listed as the #2 hospital in the Raleigh-Durham metro area, and #3 in North Carolina.

In addition to UNC Hospitals, several other UNC Health Care facilities were recognized for their excellence.

UNC REX Healthcare is listed as the #3 hospital in the Raleigh-Durham metro area, and #8 in North Carolina. Nine treatment areas at UNC REX were rated as High Performing, including:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurism Repair
  • Aortic Valve Surgery
  • Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Heart Failure
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Hip Replacement
  • Knee Replacement
  • Lung Cancer Surgery

High Point Regional Hospital was listed as the #17 hospital in North Carolina and recognized as High Preforming in three specialty treatment areas, including:

  • Heart Failure
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Hip Replacement

UNC Nash Health Care earned a High Performing rating in the treatment of Heart Failure. Johnston Health earned a High Performing rating in the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and Pardee Hospital earned a High Performing rating in Knee Replacement.
