CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Mark Gwynne, DO, has been named President of UNC Health Alliance and UNC Senior Alliance.

UNC Health Alliance is UNC Health Care’s statewide, physician-led clinically integrated network, and is the primary vehicle created to transform health care delivery and alternative payment models on behalf of more than 5,000 providers, including community-based providers along with those employed by UNC Health Care’s affiliate entities.

UNC Senior Alliance is UNC Health Care’s physician-led Medicare accountable care organization (ACO).

“We had an extensive nationwide search that included more than 30 candidates,” said Matt Ewend, MD, FACS, President of UNC Physicians. “Among this distinguished candidate pool, Dr. Gwynne differentiated himself as the right choice for this very important position.”

Dr. Gwynne has served as the Interim President and Executive Medical Director for UNC Health Alliance and UNC Senior Alliance for nearly a year. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing a partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and finalizing the Blue Value with UNC Health Alliance agreement and the Blue Premier Alternative Payment Model.

“I am extremely honored to be chosen for this position, and I am looking forward to continuing our ongoing work to provide the highest quality, affordable care to North Carolinians,” Gwynne said.

Previously, Dr. Gwynne served UNC Health Alliance as Senior Medical Director and Chairman of the Board of Managers. Dr. Gwynne is also an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine, where he has served on faculty for the past 15 years.

Dr. Gwynne received his medical degree from the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2001. He completed his residency and fellowship in family medicine and faculty development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Gwynne has published significantly about care redesign and he is board-certified in Family Medicine.

“In addition to actively practicing inpatient and outpatient medicine, Dr. Gwynne has spent significant time throughout his career developing new models of population health care delivery that enhance value by improving quality while decreasing total cost of care,” explained Darren A. DeWalt, MD, MPH Chief, Division of General Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology and Board Chair of UNC Health Alliance.

“Dr. Gwynne believes that the principles of continuous quality improvement can be the foundation for change in how we organize and deliver healthcare, and firmly believes in the mission to serve North Carolinians by improving health and decreasing suffering throughout the state,” DeWalt concluded.
