The Orthopaedic Research Society Annual Meeting took place in Las Vegas, NV on March 28-31, 2015. Several UNC Orthopaedics faculty members had abstracts presented at the conference, and both Dr. Laurence Dahners and Dr. Paul Weinhold attended the meeting.
A team of UNC Orthopaedics faculty and staff raised $3410 to participate in the Unified Relay Across America, carrying the Flame of Hope to the Special Olympics World Games.
The MSK Course came to a close in early May, marking its 37th year as one of the highest rated second year medical school courses. It will be reorganized in October of this year to begin as a part of the School of Medicine’s Translational Education at Carolina (TEC) curriculum. Dr. Robert Esther will continue to be the course director.

Orthopaedics at UNC School of Medicine will begin broadcasting out several types of conferences, lectures, meetings and workshops through the (Cisco) WebEx interface.
On Match Day, March 20, the department was fortunate to match five outstanding medical students with varied backgrounds and interests. We are looking forward to the beginning of their residency training in our program on June 24, 2015.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Jeffrey Spang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina, has recently received a Career Development Grant in Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine for his project titled “Development of a Functional Osteochondral Replacement Graft: 3D Tissue Engineering and Biomimetic Stem Cell Guidance”.
