Mason Farm Road closed near ACC starting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 19

Mason Farm Road will be closed to traffic after 6 p.m. Dec. 19 through the night of Dec. 21. Normal access to the Ambulatory Care Center will be blocked.

Mason Farm Road will be closed to traffic after 6 p.m. Dec. 19 through the night of Dec. 21 as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill installs an electric duct bank near the intersection with South Columbia Street.

While the road is closed, normal access to the Ambulatory Care Center will be blocked. Traffic from South Columbia and Pittsboro streets will be detoured down Manning and West drives to get to Mason Farm Road and the ACC clinic. Vehicles leaving the clinic will turn right onto Mason Farm Road and then turn left on East and Manning drives to return to South Columbia Street. Part of the sidewalk along the east side of South Columbia Street and the south side of Mason Farm Road near the construction site will be closed. Clearly marked alternative pedestrian paths are available for access to the ACC clinic and the Glaxo Research Laboratories.

The installation crossing Mason Farm Road is the first phase of a project alongside South Columbia Street that has been coordinated with the N.C. Department of Transportation’s plan to widen that street from Manning Drive to Purefoy Road. Scheduled to begin a year from now, that project will add a center turn lane, bike lanes and sidewalks.

After the duct bank is installed across Mason Farm Road, the installation will proceed northward on South Columbia to the Manning Drive intersection. While the duct bank work will be done off the street, its construction may require temporary lane shifts along South Columbia.

The duct bank project should take three months to complete.
