Kids Cards on Sale This Holiday Season with Proceeds Benefiting North Carolina Children’s Hospital

UNC Tar Heels head football coach Butch Davis unveiled the new 2008 Kids Cards designs at the N.C. Children's Promise radiothon/telethon on November 20.

Local retailers will once again partake in the decades-long tradition of selling these holiday greeting cards, created by and for the pediatric patients of North Carolina Children's Hospital. Kids Cards raises funds to benefit the Children’s Hospital patients and families through the sale of these cards and small gift items that feature artwork created by actual patients.

"The road to recovery for children dealing with serious illness is often made easier through creative outlets that foster self-expression and the communication of feelings," said Kids Cards Manager Amanda Ballew. "Kids Cards is such an outlet at the Children's Hospital. And our patients have the double benefit of helping raise money for the hospital through their creative works."

This year's featured design, entitled "Gift Tree," depicts a holiday tree comprised of wrapped presents created by a Children's Hospital patient from Durham named Evan. Also new this year are three original designs from the popular "Baby Prints" line, illustrated by neonatal intensive care nurse Karen Thaxton. Thaxton uses actual-size hand and foot prints from the Children's Hospital’s tiniest patients to create her beautiful designs.

Kids Cards retailers include 31 Triangle-area Harris Teeter Stores, the Chapel Hill Wine Company and Studio 91 Fine Art Gallery in Chapel Hill, and Parker & Otis Gourmet Foods in Durham, among others. Kids Cards come in boxes of ten cards and retail for $8.00 per box. Harris Teeter Stores are offering an exclusive holiday promotion, selling boxes of ten cards for $7.00 per box.

The Pinwheel Print Shop, where private and corporate supporters may purchase custom imprinted holiday and special occasion cards with the click of a mouse, is back for a second time this year via the Kids Cards online store (www.kidscards.org). The site also offers unique gifts for giving and sending this holiday season.
