Chapel Hill Transit offers new service to Pittsboro

Chapel Hill Transit expanded its express bus service to the town of Pittsboro and Chatham County on Monday, Aug. 24. The cost for the service is $3 one-way or $65 per month.

The Pittsboro Express (PX) route provides weekday service between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill, along US 15-501 with stops in downtown Pittsboro and Fearrington Village. Passengers will also be able to park for free and then board the express bus at the Lowe's park and ride lot (121 Lowe's Drive, Pittsboro). The trips to and from downtown Pittsboro to Chapel Hill will take approximately 45 minutes.

The cost for the service will be $3 one-way or $65 per month, with the purchase of a CHT monthly pass that is good for unlimited rides during the month of issue.  The service will be FREE August 24, 2009 - August 31, 2009. There are a limited number of free passes. Replacement of a lost or stolen pass is approximately $780.

Passes are also available at the Chapel Hill Town Hall (405 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), Pittsboro Town Hall (635 East Street) and Piggly Wiggly (386 East Street, Pittsboro). 

The University provides annual passes for commuting students and employees of the University and UNC Health Care who are enrolled in the Commuter Alternative Program (CAP).   Employees and students living in the Chatham County area must register for the CAP program and request the annual pass for the Pittsboro service through UNC's Department of Public Safety.

The service is being provided in partnership between the Town of Chapel Hill, Town of Pittsboro and Chatham County.

CHT will also provide a guaranteed ride home program between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on days when the PX service is operating.  The guaranteed ride home program will provide pass holders who ride the PX service with a free ride to their homes or vehicles in the event of an unexpected personal emergency.  Contact CHT at 919-969-4900 for more information.
