Funds Available in the UNC Lymphedema Program

Thanks to the generosity of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, eligible breast cancer patients who develop lymphedema may apply for funds awarded to the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation to provide them with compression garments and wraps critical to their therapeutic intervention.

Lymphedema, or swelling in the arms and/or legs due to fluid retention, is commonly caused by removal of the lymph nodes or by radiation treatment for certain forms of cancer. The key is catching lymphedema early to avoid progression and severity. Physiatrists in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation manage an interdisciplinary team of therapists and other specialists to minimize lymphedema and increase quality of life for each patient.
