Help needed to build a Habitat for Humanity home

As part of its Commitment to Communities program, UNC Health Care has agreed to sponsor the construction of a Habitat for Humanity House, one that will be owned by a UNC Health Care employee.

The house will be a part of Phoenix Place a well-designed, affordable subdivision of 50 green-certified homes within the Rogers Road community in Chapel Hill. Phase 1 of the construction will include 17 houses, 14 of which will be owned by UNC or UNC Health Care employees. Employees can support this project in a number of ways.

Work on the Construction Site
No construction skills are necessary. Employees can begin volunteering at Phoenix Place, in late January, early February 2010. Construction on the UNC Health Care sponsored home begins in March. While volunteers are welcome during the week, most work is done on weekends in half day shifts of 12-16 people per shift supervised by construction professionals. This is a great team building opportunity for departments to come together with their families to help support a fellow employee.

*Employee Ambassadors who volunteer 50 or more hours on this or any other Habitat project will earn a donation from UNC Health Care to Habitat of up to $250. Hours accumulated prior to becoming an ambassador but not prior to April 30, 2009 can be counted. Registered employee ambassadors will also be given priority in scheduling their volunteer hours. Sell T-shirts
Everyone will have a chance to support this project through our T-shirt sale campaign beginning in mid-January. Shirts will sell for approximately $10 with all proceeds benefiting the construction of the home. Volunteers are needed to help sell and distribute shirts in their departments and community.
To volunteer on the construction site please contact Mae McLendon, Volunteer Coordinator with Habitat, at 932-7077 ext. 219 or via e-mail at mmclendon@orangehabitat.org.
