Ransom Street blocked to through traffic

Both lanes of the block of Ransom Street between Patterson Place and McCauley Street are closed until Nov. 1, as work continues on the replacement of the steam tunnel serving the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ransom Street is closed to through traffic from McCauley Street to Cameron Avenue. Road closure warning signs and detour signs for both vehicles and pedestrians are posted along the affected route. All residents in the area have full access to their homes at all times via the planned and marked detours.

The steam tunnel runs along a UNC-owned right-of-way running parallel to and north of McCauley Street, crossing Columbia, Pittsboro and Ransom streets, to connect the campus near Sitterson Hall to the Cogeneration Facility at 575 W. Cameron Ave. The original steam tunnel was installed in 1939 and needs replacement to avoid structural failure and to continue to provide steam service to the UNC campus.
