Updates from UNC Hospitals' Nutrition and Food Services
Nutrition and Food Services is excited to provide updates on construction of the Overlook Cafe (formerly the Carolina Chicken Company/Wendy's), Terrace Cafe renovations, and the NFS Culinary Herb Garden.
Overlook Café
Construction is underway on our new retail venue on the 2nd Floor of the N.C. Neurosciences Hospital (formerly the Carolina Chicken Company/Wendy's). The space will be called The Overlook Café and have several different dining options including made to order salads, gourmet flatbreads, fresh baked goods, homemade soups, and specialty bagels. Look for it to open later this summer.
Terrace Café
Renovations will be completed soon in the Terrace Café. The Dogwood Deli will switch into primarily grab and go items, making room for Red Ginger, UNC Health Care’s new pan Asian concept which will feature daily specials like Vegetable Curry and Wok Kissed Udon Noodles & Shrimp as well standard Asian favorites like General Tso’s Chicken.
We will also renovate the Showtime area into Max Mangoes, with fresh fruit smoothies and frozen yogurt treats.
Nutrition and Food Services Culinary Herb Garden
Several volunteers from Nutrition and Food Services pitched in early Saturday, May 30, to plant a culinary herb garden in the Neurosciences Hospital atrium. If you are walking by the atrium stop in to see the different types of basil, oregano, thyme, tarragon, and other herbs that Nutrition and Food Services will be using every day in their patient and retail dishes. Special thanks to Lead Pediatric Dietitian Pat Becker for hand making the stepping stones in the garden.
As a side note, the dirt used in the culinary garden came from Bland Landscaping, who in turn buys the compost in the dirt from Brooks Contracting, whose trucks you might have seen on our back dock composting our food waste. The compost we help make is now making our gardens grow!
