Elisabeth Potts Dellon, MD, MPH, was among four American physicians named yesterday as recipients of the first-ever Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Awards for exceptional work in end of life care.

Dr. H. Shelton “Shelley” Earp III, the director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC-Chapel Hill was honored Friday (Jan. 8) with the General Alumni Association’s Faculty Service Award.
Family House Diaries: Taking One Day at a Time Post-Bone Marrow Transplant
Nineteen-year-old Lilly Parillo of Asheville, N.C. had a cancer-curing bone marrow transplant at UNC Hospitals. Then, for medical reasons, she was required to stay in Chapel Hill for the next 100 days. SECU Family House gave her a home away from home for that three-month period.
Institute for Healthcare Improvement Launches Improvement Map, Passport Program
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has launched an online tool called the Improvement Map, which serves as a resource to health care organizations in improving quality of care. This tool includes the best knowledge for improving approximately 70 processes in patient care, support services, and leadership/management. It is updated regularly.
NC TraCS & Core Lab Facilities Poster Session
The Office of Translational Technologies within the NC TraCS Institute is facilitating a Core Lab Facilities Poster Session on Jan. 26 from noon to 2 p.m. in the lobbies of Medical Biomolecular Research Building (MBRB).

The lecture will be held Jan. 27. Edward J. Benz, president of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and Professor at Harvard Medical School, will be this year's presenter. His talk is entitled, "Mentors, Messages, and the Future of Physician Scientists." Poster and slide presentations by John B. Graham Student Research Society Inductees will follow the lecture.
Excellence Fund Seed Grant application available
The Excellence Fund provides Seed Grant Awards to UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals to support innovative research projects which may lead to new treatments and cures for today's diseases. The application deadline is Jan. 28, 2010.
UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program adds Mindfulness Program
The UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program (CCSP), part of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the N.C. Cancer Hospital is launching a new program, Mindfulness for Persons with Cancer or Chronic Illness. The UNC Mindfulness-Based Program for Stress and Pain Management offers a series of 8 classes, training in meditation and mind-body awareness. The program is open to patients and caregivers facing the challenge of cancer or chronic illness.
