UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program adds Mindfulness Program

The UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program (CCSP), part of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the N.C. Cancer Hospital is launching a new program, Mindfulness for Persons with Cancer or Chronic Illness. The UNC Mindfulness-Based Program for Stress and Pain Management offers a series of 8 classes, training in meditation and mind-body awareness. The program is open to patients and caregivers facing the challenge of cancer or chronic illness.

These classes have been show to enhance the body’s natural adaptive healing ability and cultivate ease, compassion, and clarity in living life with increased contentment.  This series is specifically for persons with cancer, cardiac disease, chronic pain, or other ongoing physical challenges.  Caregivers and family members of those with chronic illnesses will also benefit from this training. 

Led by instructor Susan Head, PhD, the course will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. from Jan. 27 - March 16, 2010.  Classes are located at the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program, 6013 Farrington Road, Suite 101, Chapel Hill – parking is free. The course fee is $370 for the general public and $320 for individuals affiliated with UNC if registration is received by Jan. 19.  Scholarships are available if financial assistance is needed.  Call 966-8586 or e-mail mindfulness@med.unc.edu to register or find out more information.
